DIY Wind Generators
Do you remember as a child seeing these big wind mills on farms and wondering what they were for? You may have thought they were used as a fan or as a thing of beauty. They served both of these purposes and more and still do today. However, the purpose of wind mills that stands out in our minds the most is of an energy source. Wind energy is produced today in the same way it was provided by the old-time wind mills years ago.
A wind turbine will sit on top of a tall tower waiting for the wind to blow. When the wind blows, the turbine starts turning and kinetic energy is produced and converted into electricity. This same electricity can be used to power your home appliances, air conditioners, lights and even your entire home, if there’s enough electricity or wind. The goal of everyone using wind power or wind generators is to get “off the grid” and rely solely on the wind or sun for all their energy needs.

Several factors determine how much energy you can get from the wind. These factors include the size and location of your home, the size of your wind mill and the average wind speeds. Areas that are common for having strong winds are going to produce a lot of energy that can be converted to electricity while winds less than 7 to 15 mph will still require the assistance of your local utility company for electricity. If you have winds that are consistent and strong enough, you may produce more energy than you need, which will enable you to sell it back to the electric company. What a change that will be to have them paying you instead of the other way around.
Making the decision to “go green” with your energy needs will not only save you money but will also be helping you do your part in preserving and protecting the environment. Homeowners deciding to go green with solar energy have their choice of solar energy from the sun energy, wind energy or both. More people every day are becoming interested in switching to solar and wind energy to avoid having to pay high monthly bills to their utility companies.
Of the many that are interested, only a portion of these individuals actually make the switch because they believe the cost is more than they can afford. Having a complete system installed can cost several thousands of dollars. Although the money they save on utility costs will make the system pay for itself in a few years, the initial cost can be high, which is why the ones that are serious about switching are choosing DIY solar energy systems, particularly DIY wind generators.
Whether you choose to use an instruction book or one of the many DIY kits and manuals for making DIY wind generators, once you begin you’ll find that it’s much easier than you imagined. In fact, not only is it easy to build your own wind generator but you can do this for under $200 with the right tools and the ability to read and follow directions! Even if you know absolutely nothing about solar energy and going green, you’ll be able to build a DIY wind generator.
